Language policy

This policy highlights the importance of language as a facet of international mindedness and how the school works to strengthen student’s language capabilities both inside and outside of the formal classroom setting. It also emphasises the expectations of students and teachers in their use of English as the working language in the programme.

We believe that the understanding of languages and the ability to communicate is essential in order to both participate and feel included in the society. We recognize that the understanding of different languages is the very foundation for students to become internationally minded citizens.

At Elverum vgs most students have a background from the Norwegian school system where they study English from class 1. Many of our students begin studying a second foreign language from class 8 (Spanish, German, French, Italian, Russian being the most common languages).

This means that the large majority of our students have a good understanding of at least one foreign language when enrolling in the IB-programme.
